Kept.

The reverse was contra enamel, applied to protect the copper. It came out of the kiln looking like the night sky - deep, dark, scattered with the particular quality of light that fused glass on metal produces. It was too beautiful to face inward. The coin became double-sided.

The night sky has always been the thing. The scale of it, the silence of it, the questions it refuses to answer. That feeling has a name - existentialism, and this piece carries it on its back, literally.

The display stand is the artist's first-ever handmade pine wood stand, finished in black acrylic varnish. It was built with screws at different heights so the coin could be slid out and flipped easily. A calibration error during adjustments means the coin no longer sits with a perfect fit. The stand and the coin are sold together as a set - an honest document of early craft, imperfection included.

Medium: vitreous enamel on copper

Technique: wet packing, kiln-fired; contra enamel reverse

Dimensions: 21 mm radius; stand - 80 × 79 mm, solid pine, black acrylic varnish

Year: 2024

Edition: unique - one of a kind

Series: First Fires — Experimental Enamel

Artist: A. Different glass powder colours mixed together, wet-packed onto copper, fired in the kiln with no plan beyond wanting to see what would happen. What happened was this.

Because it was a first piece, there is no contra enamel on the reverse - that knowledge came later. Rather than hide the gap, the solution became part of the work: a rubber magnet mounted to the bare copper back, and a display stand rebuilt around it. The stand is repurposed solid pine from a previous project, finished in matte black, with magnets integrated into both the wood and the coin. The artwork snaps to the stand. The stand mounts to any magnetic surface - a fridge, a metal shelf, a wall panel. It goes where you put it.

The dual-magnet system was not designed. Organic glass bubbles, dense and irregular, covering the copper in a pattern that felt simultaneously smooth and rough to the touch. The mind reaches for the nearest reference. Whale skin was the one that arrived.

The texture was not planned. It came from a collision of decisions: wet enamel fired with adhesive before it had fully dried, a high-temperature transparent enamel that refused to stay transparent, and a kiln pushed to its limit. None of these choices alone would have produced this. Together, they produced something that cannot be repeated — a surface the kiln decided on, with no official name and no reliable path back to it.

The piece is 50 × 51 mm. Spiders are creatures I have always watched from a distance - with curiosity, not fear. This one was painted from that feeling.

The surface carries the particular luminosity that only kiln-fired glass on metal can produce: depth without gloss, colour without pigment, permanence without weight.
