Baby Pigeons

We let them hatch. We still netted the balcony. We are not sure we are the good guys.

Last winter, pigeons found my husband's balcony. Not just to visit - to nest, to lay, to hatch. We watched it happen. We made a choice, or rather, we kept not making the opposite one: we did not shoo them away, we did not remove the nest, we did not do what most people do. When the mother disappeared for too long, my husband left out water for the chicks. We told ourselves we were helping.

They grew up. They left. And then we netted the balcony.

The mess they left behind was extraordinary - the kind that makes you understand, viscerally, why most of humanity is not kind to pigeons. We cleaned it. We sealed the space. And now they sometimes still come back, pressing themselves against the net, trying to find the way in. I have had to rescue them from it more than once. We are the ones who closed the door, and we are the ones who keep pulling them free when they get caught in it. The dilemma did not resolve. It just changed shape.

Baby Pigeons is the third work in the House Zoo series, a collection about the wild that moves in without asking. The piece does not take a side. Neither do we, really.
