Whale Cat

It started with whale skin. It ended with a cat.

Whale Cat came directly out of the Whale Skin experiment - that piece, with its strange bubble texture, sent the mind toward whales. And whales, once you start reading about them, are genuinely astonishing: land animals once, too large eventually to hold themselves upright against gravity, returned to the sea over millions of years. Grand, slow, improbable creatures.

The cat arrived as the natural vessel for that feeling. At Vilniaus dailės akademija, Telšiai faculty - where the artist is completing a bachelor’s degree in metal art and jewellery - a project explored the cat as a symbol of authenticity. The cat does not perform. It simply is. Put that expression on a face contemplating the entire arc of whale evolution, and something clicks. The meme format is not ironic here. It is the most honest available language for cosmic wonder.

The piece is made using fine silver wire cloisonné: each line of the character formed by hand, the cells filled with pigmented glass powders and fused to copper at 800°C. The first official work in the House Zoo series.
